Holidays - Fiji, an Introduction

scuba gear
Liam G asked:

In short, Fiji is tropical paradise made up of over 220 volcanic and coral islands, of which only 100 or so are inhabited.

The archipelago is situated around 2,000 miles east of Australia, and is flanked by the world’s fourth largest barrier reef.

The main lure of Fiji when compared to other South Pacific resorts is the wealth of diversity that is on offer, both geographically and culturally. There truly is something for everyone from romantic couples and discerning travellers to thrill seekers and backpackers.

The main and largest island, Viti Levu is home to the capital, Suvo and the country’s main airport - Nadi. Although the capital doesn’t have much to offer visitors the island is amass with coral coast beaches, and has the largest concentration of costal resorts of all of Fiji’s islands.

The least developed area of Viti Levu is around the northern coast, where you will find some traditional Fijian villages backed by some of the country’s most beautiful mountains.

Just a few minutes by plane from Nadi are the Mamanuca Islands, which are easily Fiji’s most popular destination. Some of the islands are small enough to walk around, and others are bordered by miles of sweeping beaches. These islands are more geared towards those who wish to party all night, or indulge in leisurely water sports like banana boat rides, para-sailing and game fishing.

On from here are the Yasawa Islands which offer the perfect balance between traditional Fijian life and semi-popular resorts. The pace of life on these islands is generally quite slow, and there is plenty of opportunity to meet other travellers.

For the more romantic getaway then the most isolated island Rotuma, is undoubtedly the winner. Although the most expensive to get to and lacking accommodation, it offers an unparalleled amount of untouched beauty.

Lastly are the northern and southern islands that offer world class scuba diving and surfing opportunities and some excellent night time scuba diving expeditions. On land the dense rainforests and mountains make for exhilarating hiking treks.

With the wealth of activities on offer, it’s no surprise to hear that the Fuji has become a popular holidays destination. All of the extra interest in holidays to Fiji has made finding cheap holidays there a breeze a breeze.

Vacation Advice Needed! Where can I go that has both scuba diving and mountains?

LoGo asked:

My husband is a fish out of water - scuba diving, snorkelling, etc. I love the mountains - peaceful, cool, quiet. I want to go on a second Honeymoon, but I don’t want to drag him someplace or be dragged. Is there a cruise that would visit both mountains and reefs? Where should we go?

Chad R asked:

I am wanting to become certified for SCUBA diving but I don’t have anyone to take classes with, all my friends are scared of SCUBA diving. So will dive shops still certify you if you are solo?

Walt Disney World for Teens

Cara Goldsbury asked:

Can teens really have fun at a place like Walt Disney World? Absolutely! Actually, be prepared to have the time of your life. It’s a safe place to assert some independence from your parents, a place you’ll never forget. Here are some of the best experiences for teens at “The Most Magical Place on Earth”:

Have a Splashing Good Time at Disney’s Water Parks

For a blast of a time, head to one of Disney’s two water parks. Blizzard Beach has a melting alpine resort theme where chairlifts carry swimmers instead of skiers. It’s a place for daredevils to challenge wild, rushing water and death-defying slides including the Summit Plummet, a 120-foot slide reaching speeds of 60 miles per hour. Those a bit less adventuresome will love Typhoon Lagoon, a tropical fantasyland offering a wave pool with the tallest simulated waves in the world as well as a chance to snorkel among tropical fish, leopard and nurse sharks, and picturesque coral at Shark Reef.

Live it Up at Downtown Disney

After the parks close hop a bus from your Disney resort for a night on the town at Downtown Disney. Highlights include Disney Quest with five floors of interactive games, a 24-screen AMC Theater, a Cirque du Soleil show, and over 60 shops and restaurants. Favorite dining choices for the younger crowd are Planet Hollywood and Rainforest Café. And definitely consider House of Blues where teens are allowed to attend some of the almost daily concerts in their live music venue next-door.

Cool Off at One of Disney’s Resort Pools

When your parents are wondering which resort to book for your Disney vacation, be sure and put your two cents in and steer them toward one with a great pool. Disney’s very best uniquely themed pools include the Yacht and Beach Club’s Stormalong Bay, a 3-acre mini-water park, the Swan and Dolphin’s lush, grotto-style lagoon pool, the boulder-strewn wonderland at the Wilderness Lodge with its very own erupting geyser, and the Volcano Pool at the Polynesian Resort with its luxuriant waterfall, smoking peak, and perfect views of Cinderella’s Castle.

Plan Some Watersport Fun

Disney’s Contemporary Resort is the place for water-ski, parasail, wakeboard, kneeboard, and jet-ski action under the guidance of a professional instructor. There’s nothing better than a bird’s-eye-view of the Magic Kingdom as you parasail high above the Seven Seas Lagoon. And the action down below on Bay Lake is a blast! For reservations call 407-WDW-PLAY up to 180 days in advance, and be sure to bring a parent along to sign a waiver to participate if you’re under age 18.

Pilot Your Own Boat

What could be more fun than renting a Sea Raycer, a 2-seater mini-power boat perfect for zipping around Disney’s waterways and lakes. It’s a great pastime for teens with a valid driver’s license (those under 18 must bring along a parent to sign a waiver). You’ll get the most bang for your buck at one of the resorts near the Magic Kingdom (the Contemporary, Polynesian, Grand Floridian, or Wilderness Lodge) where you’ll find miles of recreation on the Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake.

Scuba and Snorkel at Epcot’s Living Seas

Scuba dive or snorkel in The Living Seas 5.7-million-gallon saltwater aquarium amid a variety of sharks, rays, fish, and turtles. Epcot’s DiveQuest Program along with the Seas Aqua Tour using a Scuba Assisted Snorkel unit (snorkelers swim on the surface with a built-in flotation device while breathing compressed air from a regulator attached to a small tank) are two of the most exciting behind-the-scenes tours offered in all of Walt Disney World. Dives include all equipment, but be sure to bring a bathing suit. DiveQuest is open to certified divers, but those ages 14 and under need to dive along with a parent or guardian. The Seas Aqua Tour is open to participants under age 18 as long as they are accompanied by a participating adult. Call 407-WDW-TOUR for reservations.

Surf’s Up at Typhoon Lagoon

“Hang 10″ before park opening hours in the 2.75-million-gallon wave pool (some waves as high as 6 feet tall!) under the guidance of professional instructors with surfboards provided. Guests must furnish their own transportation to the park since Disney buses are not up and running that early in the morning, and those under age 18 must have a signed waiver from their parents to participate. Call 407-WDW-PLAY for reservations.

White-Knuckle Riding at Richard Petty Driving Experience

Lying next to the Magic Kingdom is this speedway where white-knuckle rides in a NASCAR Winston Cup–style race car are offered. If you are at least 16 you can participate in the Ride-Along Program where you’ll ride shotgun at speeds of up to 145 mph for three laps around the track with an experienced instructor (riders 16 or 17 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian). Even more exciting, those ages 18 and older can drive the car themselves after an introductory class. If you just want to observe you can do so for no charge. Call 800-BE-PETTY for advance reservations.

Head for a Theme Park

Last but certainly not least are the theme parks. If you’re staying on Disney property it’s a cinch to board a monorail or a Disney bus and head out to the parks on your own.

At the Magic Kingdom you’ll find all the old nostalgic favorites like Space Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean. And don’t forget to head straight to Splash Mountain, an unforgettable ride that ends in a plunge over a 5-story waterfall! Epcot’s main attractions for fun-loving teens are Soarin’ a fun hang-gliding experience in front of an IMAX size screen, Mission Space, a hair-raising rocket into space, and Test Track where you’ll speed through hairpin turns and then barrel outside onto a high-speed banking loop at over 60 mph. At Disney-MGM Studios you’ll be floored by Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, both a thrill a minute. Then there’s the Animal Kingdom where a trip around the African savanna at Kilimanjaro Safaris, back in time 65 million years at Dinosaur, and a trip to the Himalayas at Expedition Everest are quite the adventure.

Super thrill seekers should plan a day at Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure where attractions like the Incredible Hulk Coaster, Dueling Dragons, and The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman will leave your heart pounding.

So do you still think Disney is just for kids? I bet you can’t wait to pack your bags. And don’t forget to thank your parents on your return home for taking you to one of the most exciting places on the planet.

Saving Reefs While Practicing Scuba Diving

scuba
Matthias Zeitler asked:

Scuba diving does not only imply discovering the wonderful world of the seas but it also means trying to help and improve the nature. It is well known that humans do not always have a good behavior when it comes to the nature and they tend to change it as much as possible. However, there are many things we should do to help nature and scuba divers can do a lot to preserve in the proper way the beauty of the seas that they visit.

Waters are very affected by many dregs as petroleum residue, black ash waste, paraffinous residue, atomic waste that constantly modifies the existence of the sea organisms and can destroy their habitats. Global warming is also a big problem for these creatures that may not survive to the new temperatures. Coral reefs are also suffering because of the residues which threaten the sea waters. Nowadays, reefs problems are increasing so much that it may cause many damages to sea organisms. This is very important because their health depends on their habitats and on the water’s health too.

If you are one of the scuba divers who really want to understand how serious can the coral reef’s problems get then you should first know something about them. Coral reefs are the best habitats for many sea organisms and they are made of polyp masses, which constantly grow and a base that is made up of corals.

There are some cases when the sea organisms can disturb the coral reefs. For example, damselfishes create a sort of algae farms which are added to the coral reef and in time, the damselfish eat these algae. Therefore, the coral reefs’ damages are increasing as the number of damselfish increases. As a consequence, the equilibrium is needed for the coral reefs to be maintained safe and those who practice scuba diving can help if they want.

It is required to be as gentle as possible with coral reefs while scuba diving and you should also always avoid bringing detrimental substances that may be very harmful to the corals. When you scuba dive for studying the coral reefs you should have in mind that they are living creatures, they are more than just great beautiful habitats for sea organisms. Be careful while swimming around amazing coral reefs and don’t bring harmful substances with you on your trip.

The most important thing when you practice scuba diving around the world’s waters is for you to respect the nature. Never forget that residues affect everything, including coral reefs so protect them as much as possible. We all want to visit great scuba diving locations but this implies us protecting the nature and many forget this simple fact. Once we learn how to appreciate the wonders of the nature we will be able to practice scuba diving and understand that this activity is not only a recreational one but also an experience that implies protecting the nature.

A scuba diver is dead and stuck in a burnt out tree, the diver himself is unburnt he is?

Preparing For Scuba With Scuba Diving Lessons

scuba
Michelle Bery asked:

In today’s world, where ordinary citizens and adrenalin-junkies alike are equally capable of chasing adventure, we turn to lessons to make sure we have the appropriate skills. We have lessons for golf, tennis, dance, and any other activity or hobby that can summoned to mind. But for those activities that come with risk, lessons become even more important. Subsequently, those who are interested in scuba diving should always begin with comprehensive scuba diving lessons.

If you are in good health, you can scuba dive. And with proper scuba diving lessons you can do so safely to ensure you get the most enjoyment out of your experience as possible. Finding scuba diving lessons is relatively easy, as scuba diving continues to rise in popularity. Luckily, the availability of lessons does not in any way depend on your proximity to the ocean. Scuba diving lessons are taught in indoor pools which gives the instructor maximum control and eliminates the variables that can easily arise in open water. For students, scuba diving lessons should be confidence building and the best way to achieve this confidence is by mastering your technique in a confined and controlled environment.

In most cases, however, scuba diving lessons actually begin with comprehensive classroom instruction where students are given the basics of the scuba diving technique. Only when the instructor is comfortable that all students completely understand scuba techniques - and the reasons behind them - will you enter the pool. In some cases, equipment can also be rented for scuba diving lessons - an enormous benefit for those who are delaying the purchase of pricey equipment until they receive scuba certification.

Pool instruction during scuba diving lessons offer students the opportunity to put those classroom lessons into use, practicing techniques over and over until they are comfortable. It is essential that these systems are mastered; scuba diving can be dangerous if not done properly and with full respect of the equipment and the water.

There are scuba diving lessons that are offered for children and adults separately. Be sure to research any instructors or instruction facilities to ensure that they are reputable and experienced in training.

Upon successful completion of your scuba diving lessons you will be certified for scuba diving; and you will be well on your way to enjoying a lifetime of adventure and exploration.
