Next up: Roy Grabenauer built his first single-passenger kayak, the Royak, in 1968.

The Royak’s claim to fame is that it set the precedent for all sit-on-top kayak designs.

His design of a lightweight, comfortable boat that would not sink, that he could get in and out of easily in rough water, and that had enough storage for his scuba gear quickly gained popularity in the Northern California scuba diving scene.

With 300 orders in his first year of business, Roy was clearly on his way. By 1978, 2,000 Royaks were sold worldwide. Today, the Royak Company boasts a complete line of Royak models, accessories, and gear.

For more information about the Royak experience, including details about their unique Blenderboat, please visit http://www.Royak.com

Exotic Koh Chang, New Island Resort In Thailand

scuba diver
Chris Chew asked:

Koh Chang is an exotic island resort in Thailand which is obscured by its more famous counterparts, the island resorts of Phuket and Koh Samui.It is the third largest island in Thailand behind Phuket and Koh Samui respectively.

However, the obscurity of this island is waning as more and more people are getting to know about this island’s tourism potential and are making a beeline this relatively quieter and unspoilt Thai island resort.

With more and more domestic and foreign tourists visiting to Koh Chang for their holiday vacation, developers and hotel owners are rushing in to tap this market potential. For example, the Amari Emerald Cove Resort, the first 5-star resort hotel on the main island opened its doors just a few years ago and since then, there are many such projects springing up in Koh Chang.

The White Sand Beach area is a family oriented area and quite a number of assorted beach resorts and hotels can be found here along with some luxurious beach resorts such as Chang Buri Resort and Spa and Koh Chang Kacha Resort and Spa. There are also simple beach hut shacks such as the Rock Sand Bungalow and the evergreen Bamboo Bungalow for the budget conscious tourists.

Located on the western side of Koh Chang is the Hat Tha Nam or Lonely Beach which is also very popular with low budget travelers and the backpacking tourists whereas Kai Bae beach is more popular with scuba divers.

The Thai government has announced that Koh Chang will developed into the next premium beach resort tourist destination and vowed that they will not commit the same mistakes they made in Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui where resort development was not meticulously regulated and are infrastructural nightmares.

In Koh Chang however, the Thai authorities have imposed strict building regulations and directives for beach front developments such as limiting all man-made structures to a maximum height of three storeys. To control indiscriminate developments, the government declared 85% of Koh Chang as a national park and thus any developments are disallowed in these areas.

Unlike Phuket and Koh Samui with their cacophony of tourism related shops, noisy entertainment outlets and sleazy clubs, Koh Chang is just the opposite and is tranquil, quiet and delightful. Tourists have almost nothing to do besides enjoying water sports like snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing or just simply soaking up the sun by the beaches.

There are 52 islands which make up Koh Chang National Marine Park and thus potential for the scuba diving industry is excellent. Already, there are more than 20 dive operators in this island resort offering scuba diving excursions, conducting certification lessons and renting diving related equipment.

The best time to go scuba diving in Koh Chang is in the beginning of the year when its pristine water is calm and underwater visibility is at its best. Non divers can also take catamarans to go island hopping cruises.

For tourists and beach lovers who prefer laid back beaches and unspoilt nature, do visit Koh Chang now before it is morphed into another commercialized beach destination in Thailand. Will Koh Chang island resort become the next Phuket or Koh Samui? Only time can provide the answer.

This exotic tourist attraction in Thailand is accessible by ferry from Trat on Eastern Thailand and the peak season to frolic in Koh Chang’s beautiful beaches is from December to April.

53 Torrent Shipwreck Discovery, Boat Hoses, Scuba Diving Cat

TheBoatersTV asked:

http://www.TheBoaters.TV EP 53 — First up today: A Private Dive Team Discovers Wreckage of an American Ship That Sank 139 Years Ago Off South-Central Alaska Coast

It was reported last Monday that a private dive team discovered the wreckage of an American ship that sank 139 years ago off the mainland of south-central Alaska.

In 1868, the “Torrent,” a 641-ton three-masted sailing bark, sank in Alaska’s Cook Inlet after tidal currents rammed it into a reef.

Aboard the vessel at the time were women, children and a battery of 130 U.S. Army soldiers who had come north to build the first U.S. military fort on the mainland of south-central Alaska. Documents from the period show that all passengers survived the accident.

The vessel wreckage was actually first discovered back in July after a nearly two-year long search by a four-man dive team led by Steve Lloyd, a shipwreck historian and veteran of a half-dozen other shipwreck expeditions in Alaska.

The group held back on announcing its discovery until this week so the state could take steps to preserve and protect the shipwreck, which is now being considered for listing in the National Registry of Historic Places.

To learn more and see more incredible photos from the site, please head on over to Steve Lloyd’s website at http://www.LostShipwrecks.com

Steve Lloyd has also posted the video you are watching on YouTube, just uploaded last week and featuring footage of the wreckage:

Congratulations to Steve and his entire team for their determination in bringing the Torrent and its history to the surface.

Next up: Knowing When and How to Purchase Replacement Hoses for Your Boat

If you think that a hose is a hose is a hose is a hose, think again. As boating writers Gordon and Janet Groene point out, any broken hose on your boat spells TROUBLE, so it’s important to replace hoses before they fail.

When it comes to buying the right replacement hose in the right size and installing it to marine standards, we present some specs that the Groenes suggest you look for with regard to the following categories:

* Temperature Rating
* Pressure Rating
* Suction Rating
* Compatibility
* Flexibility

But most importantly, know that installing the wrong hose could cause breakdown or an accident, void your guarantee or reduce your insurance settlement. It’s not a purchase to be taken lightly.

Finally today: Crazy Video of Hawkeye — The Scuba Diving (Get This!) Cat

Gene Alba of Redding California built a special diving apparatus for his cat, Hawkeye, which allows the cat to spend up to one hour at a time underwater.

Crazier still is that Hawkeye’s owners is not his only diving companion …there’s also Alba’s dog, Mutton!

How can i prevent my ears hurting when scuba diving?

Kim asked:

My boyfriend has been scuba diving for a number of years, and i’ve recently decided to start.
The problem is, after going down only to about 2 metres, the pressure in my ears is really strong and painful.
I have the same problem when flying, and have to use ear plugs which relieve pressure. There is nothing wrong with my ears, i have been the doctors,
Does anyone know if there are any ear plugs, similar to the ones i use for flying, that relieve pressure in the ears? or could i possibly use my flying ear plugs to go scuba diving?
I cant hold my breath and make my ears “pop” thats part of the problem.
